Amy Cuddy: Your body language shapes who you are

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Matters

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

How Smart Devices and Social Media Impact Your Shopping Habits [INFOGRAPHIC]

See on Scoop.it - Transformations in Business

Online tools such as review sites, social networks and smartphones produce data for merchants that, if analyzed properly “in real time,” can transform the way consumers shop, according to a new infographic by custom development firm Symphony Teleca. This, in turn, would equal big bucks for business owners.

Entitled “The Meaning of Like,” the infographic shows just how much consumers are connected to the web. A staggering 167 million people will shop online this year, spending an average of $1,800 per person, it reveals. Unsurprisingly, shoppers are using their smartphones to look for sales and special deals, as well as read product reviews and ratings.

Free online courses will change universities

See on Scoop.it - Studying Teaching and Learning

The internet revolution has moved to education as top universities worldwide rush to put free courses online, setting up so-called massive open online courses or MOOCs. Higher education’s traditional business model is under threat as learning from the world’s most prestigious academic experts is available to anybody with a computer and broadband access.
Two top Australian universities, Melbourne and Queensland, have joined in. The University of Melbourne announced last Wednesday its partnership with Coursera, a leading US-based provider of free online university courses. The University of Queensland will shortly announce a partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) office of educational innovation and technology to use MOOC courses to both offer free courses to the public online and simultaneously its educational offering to on-campus students.

What it Takes to Launch a Mobile Learning Program in Schools

See on Scoop.it - Studying Teaching and Learning

As mobile learning programs become more ubiquitous, international attention is focusing on how different countries integrate mobile devices into formal schooling. Last month, United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) released a comprehensive report called UNESCO Working Paper Series on Mobile Learning on the state of mobile learning around the world.
The report breaks down usage and policies in different areas, including North America, and part of the research focuses on “Essential Conditions for Mobile Learning.” In this section of the report, researchers present five key conditions that must exist for a mobile learning initiative to succeed: visionary leadership and commitment, robust technology capacity, professional development, scalability, and policies that promote and support the initiative.

Hackers Hold Health Data Hostage

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives on Health

A disturbing new trend is emerging: hackers holding health data for ransom.
A recent case involved the Surgeons of Lake County, a medical practice in Libertyville, Ill., where hackers were able to access electronic medical records and emails, Bloomberg reported, citing a privacy blog Dissent Doe.

The hackers encrypted the records and demanded the practice pay money for a password to access the files. The practice declined to pay, shut down the server and notified authorities. It was unclear from the report whether the practice was eventually able to access its EHR records, or if so, how.
