How online education can create a 'global classroom'

Around the world, and in developing nations especially, there is an overwhelming demand for higher education.

Despite worldwide increases in tertiary enrolment numbers, there still remains disparity between those with access to quality education and those without.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, only 6% of college-age students are enrolled in higher education.

RSVP Now to Debate MOOCs Impact in the Developing World

What is the impact of MOOCs on education in the developing world?

Do MOOCs offer massive opportunity to move past the limited physical constraints of the developing world’s universities? Could we see MOOCs break past even the online and distance education gains to become a paradigm shift in educating the youth bulge that is overwhelming formal educational structures?Or are MOOCs just the latest fad in moving from the tried and true in-person relationship between professor and student? Do they replace in-depth analysis and learning with superficial glances at complex topics? Will MOOCs dilute the university degree even more, reducing higher education to just another certificate of perseverance instead of an indicator of intelligence?

To help answer these questions and formulate a direction for MOOCs in development, T-Rex is organizing a unique in-person discussion in Washington, DC, informed by educational technology luminaries and experts in education, development, and technology.

T-Rex is an interactive discussion series on technology for development hosted by the Center for Collaborative Technologies at IREX in partnership with Kurante.

e-Learning conference calls for sustainable innovation - University World News

The 8th International Conference on ICT for Development, Education and Training – aka e-Learning Africa – ended in the Namibian capital Windhoek with delegates calling for homegrown, sustainable innovation in e-learning to spur development across Africa.

Discussions during the three-day conference revolved around local innovation in education, healthcare delivery, livelihoods and agriculture, especially for rural communities.

In the final debate, Dr Adele Botha, an expert in implementing and using mobile technologies in goal-oriented interactions, teamed up with Angelo Gitonga from the Ministry of Education in Kenya to argue that innovation should take precedence over sustainability.
In closing the conference, Namibia’s Minister of Education Dr David Namwandi argued, to rapturous applause, that innovation and sustainability were “twin brothers” that should be vigorously promoted to develop communities.

Namibia: How ICT Could Develop Education

As a country Namibia formulated a long-term vision, called Vision 2030 that reflects the hopes and aspirations of the people. This overarching vision is to have a prosperous and industrialized nation by 2013. The 4th National Development Plan (NDP4) is formulated to realize Vision 2030 and it has an entire key results area, which is expected to create a knowledge-based economy and a technology-driven nation.

ICT offers tools and systems that can improve planning, administration and management of education at local regional and national levels. Mobile applications, databases and electronic networks can be used to enable a more efficient management of the education system. Communication tools can help ensure that policies and directives are followed through at all levels of the education system, as well as improving its responsiveness to local realities.

Google to use balloons to provide free Internet access to remote or poor areas

Project Loon will use giant helium balloons in the stratosphere to beam WiFi signals down to the ground.
Mike Cassidy, the director of Project Loon, said the aim is to provide much cheaper Internet connections around the world. In many African nations, for example, monthly Internet costs are higher than monthly salaries.
“We are focused on an enormous problem, and we don’t think we have the one solution today,” he said in a phone interview from New Zealand. “But we think we can help and start having a discussion on how to get 5 billion people in remote areas” connected to the Internet.
